Notes
  1. Sir Henry George Ward wrote the letterpress to accompany his wife's drawings; in the description of plate 4 (Catorce), he refers to 'the first edition of my Work on Mexico', i.e. Mexico in 1827, also published with Colburn in 1828 (a second edition appeared in 1829). In her turn, Emily Elizabeth Ward provided plates for Mexico in 1827, duly acknowledged by her husband in his preface: 'The drawings were all taken on the spot; many of them under circumstances which would have discouraged most persons from making the attempt, as fatigue and a burning sun often combined to render it unpleasant. I mention this in justice to Mrs. Ward, whose name, in conformity to custom, appears upon the plates, for all of which I am indebted to her pencil' (xiv).
