Howard Dudley

Dudley, Howard, 1820—1864

by Benjamin Colbert

Howard Dudley was born in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, the only son of George Dudley (d. 1827), a Quaker, and Sarah Dudley, née Cove. After his father died, the family moved to Easebourne, Sussex, where he developed an interest in engraving. In 1835, with assistance from his sister Mary Elizabeth, he published Juvenile Researches, setting type himself on his own printing press. His next project, The History and Antiquities of Horsham (1836), contained 30 woodcut engravings and 4 lithographs. Thereafter he continued to work as a wood-engraver, first in Edinburgh where he married the illustrator, Jane Ellen Young, and then London where he lived from 1852 until his death.
