Frances Jane Carey

Carey, Frances Jane née Stafford, c.1754—1860

Frances Jane Stafford, later Carey, was the daughter of the Reverend James Stafford (c.1706-84), of Penkridge, Co. Stafford. She married Peter Martin Carey (1759-1840) with whom she had a son, Sir Peter Stafford Carey (1803-86). She first visited Paris during the Peace of Amiens in 1802, and returned after the end of the Napoleonic wars, the period covered by her Journal of a Tour (1823). Her only other work appears to have been A Slight Sketch of the Life and Character of Joan d’Arc (1836). She died at Grange Terrace on the island of Guernsey in 1860 at the age of 94.
